A few months ago I was asked to be the tecnico of the school’s soccer team. This question was put to me after I showed the other teachers a picture of my soccer team in Africa. In their minds I was clearly the best candidate with my international coaching experience. In addition to the year long placment that I am currently serving, WorldTeach also offers summer volunteer positions in Costa Rica’s Telesecundarias. These are high schools that are very rural and generally have a large part of their course load taught by instructional videos. WorldTeach puts native English speakers in these classrooms for a few months and give the students a chance to learn from not only a native English speaker but a real human being. I am going to be helping with the orientation of these new volunteers this coming week.

My First Month Teaching…

I completed my first round of exams this week as my first month of teaching English in Costa Rica draws to a close. I have started to grade the test and the results are similar to what would have expected. Fifth and Sixth grade preformed well and third grade had good results also. Fourth grade did awful but this is not surprising. Most of my classes seem to be excited about learning English while fourth grade seems to be most excited about how they can annoy the gringo.
